San Mai is a layered construction borrowed from Japanese swordmaking: a hard cutting core — here CTS-XHP — jacketed between outer layers that do the showing, in this case Mike Norris's rippling “Hornet's Nest” stainless Damascus. O'Hare wraps the rest in Timascus, a titanium alloy that's heat-colored rather than painted, so the bolsters, backspacer, and pocket clip each carry their own shifting patina.
