San Mai

San mai is one of the oldest and most visually striking blade constructions in the world, and in the hands of a skilled maker it produces something genuinely special. The concept is simple: a hard, high-carbon steel core is laminated between two softer, tougher outer layers. The core takes the edge — sharp, refined, and capable of exceptional performance — while the jacket absorbs shock and resists chipping that a mono-steel blade might not. The resulting cross-section, visible at the plunge line and the spine, is unmistakable. Contemporary makers have pushed san mai in bold directions, pairing tool steel cores with stainless jacket steel, or wrapping premium steels in damascus for visual drama alongside real functional benefit.
